Your case page

Open a case from Your cases. It has three tabs:

  • Overview: the case’s stage, how far along it is, and the latest update. Choose See all updates for the full timeline.
  • Files: everything your investigator has shared with you, under Files shared with you, grouped into photos and video, documents and other files, and reports. You can switch between gallery and list view.
  • Messages: your conversation with your investigator.

Reports

Reports appear once your investigator publishes them to you. Drafts never appear. Download a report as a PDF.

Evidence

Your investigator chooses which files to share with you, so you’ll see only those, not everything in their case file.

  • Photos and PDFs can be previewed in your browser with Preview.
  • Video, audio and other files are download only.

Files are decrypted in your browser as you open or download them, so a large file can take a moment. You’ll see “Preparing your download…” and then “Saved to your downloads.”

Signed by your investigator

Your browser checks each file against your investigator’s key before it opens it. When you Preview a file, the preview shows “Signed by” and your investigator’s firm name, which appears only after that check has passed. The first key your browser saw for your investigator was trusted automatically, and the firm name comes from our servers; comparing safety codes with your investigator is how you check the rest.

If you ever see Unverified sender — Couldn’t verify this came from your investigator, the file can’t be opened. Don’t rely on it; contact your investigator by phone or your usual channel.

If something is missing or won’t open

  • A report or file you expected isn’t there. Your investigator may not have published or shared it yet. Files are shared with each client individually, so anything sent before you were invited isn’t included automatically. Ask your investigator; they can share it again.
  • “This file arrived but could not be opened.” Let your investigator know; they can share it again.
  • You see “Unlock private content”. Enter your password. See Signing in.
  • A case has disappeared. Your access to a closed case may have ended, or your investigator may have ended your access. Ask them.

PIToolkit support can’t see what’s in your case, so your investigator is the fastest person to ask.

More in Your case

  • Messaging your investigator

Send your investigator private, encrypted messages about your case. How replies reach you, what messages can hold, and the unverified-sender warning.
