For investigators who work alone

Your whole practice, in one secure workspace.

Cases, evidence, client updates, time and reports in one place, with a portal your clients can sign in to. Everything's encrypted in your browser before it reaches us, so we can't read it.

PIToolkit is in development and not open yet. A small private Beta opens next; the survey is how to get on the list.

The case list in PIToolkit's development build. Filters for status, type, last activity and client sit above five case cards, among them “Claim 4471 — slip and fall” (Active), “Harbor Street matter” (Closed) and “Pre-hire check — T. Ellison” (Inquiry), each with its case number, case type and last activity.

If this sounds like your week

One place, for one investigator.

PIToolkit is built to put those in one place, at a price that makes sense for one investigator.

  • The evidence for one case is in a cloud folder, the client's messages are on your phone, and your hours are in a spreadsheet.
  • A report takes an evening of formatting before it looks like it came from a firm.
  • Every client gets files a different way: attachments, links, a USB stick.

What you get

What's built today.

Built and reviewed in the development build. Nobody outside can use it yet; that starts with the private Beta.

  • Cases that hold everything

Case numbers, status and phase, contacts and subjects, notes and an activity timeline. Find a case by name and filter your caseload by status and phase, and choose how long a closed case is kept.

  • Evidence, fingerprinted as you upload it

Photos, video and documents, in bulk uploads that queue and resume over a weak connection. Each file is encrypted and given a SHA-256 fingerprint in your browser, then added to the case's signed hash chain. Export an evidence package with a verification report. Trusted third-party timestamping (RFC 3161) is Planned.

  • A client portal with your name on it

Invite an attorney, adjuster or other client. They see case status, the reports and files you release, and message you inside the case. Free includes 3 portal clients; paid plans are unlimited. Clients never pay.

  • Reports on your letterhead

Your logo and colours, structured sections, PDF export, or publish straight to the client's portal. A small “Prepared with PIToolkit” credit on Free.

  • Time on every case

A running timer that follows you around the app, manual entries, and an export for billing.

Everything PIToolkit does, by area

Security that isn't an upsell

The same protection on every plan, Free included.

  • We can't read your case files. Cases, notes, evidence and messages are encrypted in your browser. We hold neither your password nor your keys; our servers store ciphertext. We publish the short list of what we can see. Read the list.
  • Two-factor sign-in with an authenticator app. Security keys are Planned.
  • A recovery key, because we can't reset your password into your data. Signup has you save it and type part of it back. If you lose both your password and your recovery key, we can't get your data back; that's the cost of us being unable to read it. Assisted recovery with a trusted contact is Planned.
  • Your security log and session management, and a full export of your account (a ZIP of spreadsheets and your original files; it isn't encrypted once you've saved it).

What's not here yet

We'd rather you hear it from us.

Invoicing and online payments, a native mobile app, accounting and data-provider integrations, and team accounts for firms aren't built yet. Everything PIToolkit doesn't do today.

Common questions from solo investigators

Questions to ask any vendor, with our answers

Will the free plan really be free?

That's the plan: no card and no time limit. The limit most people reach first is 5 GB of storage, roughly one or two cases' worth of surveillance video. When you reach it, you can free up space or upgrade.

Can you get into my account if I'm locked out?

No. We hold neither your password nor your keys. That's why you save a recovery key when you sign up.

Can I take my data with me?

Yes, any time, on any plan, as a ZIP of spreadsheets and your original evidence files. The downloaded file isn't encrypted, so keep it somewhere safe. Exporting your data.

Do my clients pay anything?

No. Portal access is free for clients.

Is PIToolkit a private investigation company?

No. PIToolkit is software for private investigators. We don't perform investigations.
