Accepting an invitation
How to accept your investigator's portal invitation, create your account or sign in to an existing one, and what to do if the link doesn't work.

The invitation email
The email’s subject reads “
The link works once, only for the email address it was sent to, and expires after 14 days.
If you weren’t expecting the invitation, you can ignore it.
Accepting
Open the link. You’ll see You’ve been invited, with your firm’s name and your email address. Then:
If this is your first invitation
- Choose Create my portal account. Your email address is already filled in.
- Choose a Password of at least 12 characters and confirm it. You can add your name if you like. It’s encrypted in your browser for your investigator, so PIToolkit can’t read it.
- Choose Create my account.
Save your password somewhere safe. It’s the only key to your encrypted material. Nobody can reset it, including your investigator and PIToolkit. If you lose it, the material shared with you can’t be recovered. A password manager is a good place for it.
When you see Your account is ready, choose Go to your client portal. Your investigator will let you know when there’s something to see.
If you’ve accepted an invitation before
If you already have a portal account, from this investigator or any other who uses PIToolkit, choose I already have a portal account — sign in and sign in with your existing password, then Sign in and accept. The new case joins your other cases. Don’t create a second account.
If you’re already signed in to your portal when you open the link, you’ll see Accept this invitation and the address it was sent to. Choose Accept invitation to add it to your existing account.
After you accept
- Check your safety code with your investigator. Your account page shows it under Your safety code. Your investigator sees a code for you on their side; compare them by phone or in person, not by email. Until they approve it, they can’t share anything with you.
- If you see “Your account setup isn’t finished”, follow the link to finish setting up your account.
- Consider turning on two-factor authentication.
If the link doesn’t work
If you see “This invitation link is not valid”, it may have expired, already been used, or been withdrawn. Ask your investigator to send you a new one. PIToolkit can’t resend it for them: the link is created by your investigator and isn’t stored anywhere we could rebuild it.
If an invitation hasn’t arrived, check your spam or junk folder, and confirm with your investigator which address they sent it to.
